Foreclosures on the Rise in Loudoun
According to the Loudoun County Real Estate and Statistics blog post yesterday, almost 50 percent of completed home sales in Loudoun County are foreclosures or short sales. Of the 1,595 transactions completed since June 1, "786 have been distressed properties of one type or another." These sales have risen around 10 percent since the beginning of the year, when foreclosures and other distressed properties represented 40 percent of total sales.

Dulles South Considered for New School Site
Following up on a story broken by Living in LoCo blogger Erica Garman, The Loudoun Times-Mirror reports that Supervisor Stevens Miller has been approached with a 189-acre offer for land near Bull Run Post Office Road, which is south of South Riding. Miller is considering the offer, as the land is close to the community and would reduce transportation costs. Although the school board approved the purchase of the $20 million Lenah site in July, Miller feels the Dulles South property may be a better location for the county's new schools.

Loudoun Begins Talk of 4-day School Week
The Loudoun County School Board will soon begin discussions about the possibility of a four-day school week, according to a recent article in Leesburg Today. Superintendent Edgar B. Hatrick said that the Virginia School Board Association regularly sends him information about other school districts who have successfully switched to the four-day week. Those in favor of the four-day argue that it would reduce transportation costs and school heating and cooling expenses.
