Donald R. Gibbs, 82, a retired vice president of finance with a Northern Virginia technology firm, died Nov. 16 at his home in the Broadlands community of Loudoun County after a heart attack.
Mr. Gibbs came to Northern Virginia in 1952 as an electrical engineer with Melpar, a now-defunct technology firm. He became vice president of finance before his retirement in 1993.
Donald Ross Gibbs was born in Kansas City, Mo., served in the Navy for four years and graduated from Iowa State University.
He worked in atomic engineering in Kansas City before coming to the Washington area.
Mr. Gibbs previously lived in Vienna and Oakton and was an officer in the Oakton Mill Estates homeowners association.
He was the founder and longtime director of the choir at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna. For the past five years, he was a choir member at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Leesburg.
He spent 16 years as treasurer of the Metropolitan D.C. Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He was also president of the James Madison High School band parents club.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Shirley G. Gibbs, and two children, Richard Gibbs and Nancy Fox, all of Broadlands; and two granddaughters.
