In a video that has attracted national attention, Ben Dutton, an 83-year-old staffer for Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R), strikes a videographer working for his opponent with a metal cane. "Sir, please don't!" the 22-year-old campaign worker for Democrat Judy Feder pleads. The Feder campaign also asserts that a Wolf supporter pinned a Feder campaign staffer against a wall. Given that the best economic forecasters are calling for a multiyear downturn that is almost certain to have a disastrous impact on small businesses, it's shameful to think about instituting a new tax at local restaurants that already are feeling the strain as families cut back on entertainment. In times of economic hardship, governments should cut back on spending (just like their constituents must), not raise taxes so they can continue to grow. Read story »
