Heading into halftime of their Virginia AA state quarterfinal matchup with Lafayette on Tuesday in Ashburn, the Broad Run Spartans found themselves in an unfamiliar position. The Region II champions had not trailed at the half of a game all season and fell behind only once - in a game against Loudoun County they would go on to win 6-3 - but on this night they found themselves in a 1-0 hole with 40 minutes to play. In four consecutive games through the Virginia AAA Northern Region playoffs, top-ranked Stone Bridge used slim 1-0 wins on its way to capturing the region title. Last night in Ashburn against Eastern Region runner-up Kecoughtan, an early Bulldogs goal was not enough to stand up, as the Warriors rallied and scored with just more than five minutes remaining to defeat Stone Bridge, 2-1, in the Virginia AAA state quarterfinals. As his teammates celebrated around him, Stone Bridge senior Ronnie Shaban reflected on his team's 1-0 win over No. 3 Robinson last night in the Virginia AAA Northern Region boys' soccer championship. It wasn't pretty by soccer standards, but to Shaban, that wasn't important. Read story »

Holding at the midfield line to stay onside, Heritage senior Ivan Callejas took off when a long clearance fell in the middle of the Dominion half. The speedy senior collected the ball with no defender within 15 yards, calmly dribbled by the Titans' goalkeeper and pushed the ball into an empty net as two trailing defenders reached out in a final effort to save their season.
